A strip of desert 3 miles long that has been converted into the most opulent, glittery street in the world. More lights and neon on the Las Vegas Strip, than many whole towns. Where you can travel from Paris to Venice to Egypt or to Rome. See pirates, the whole New York City skyline in one glance, and belching volcanoes.

The Strip is approximately 3 1/2 miles long, so you can see it can be quite a walk to different hotels, restaurants etc., especially since it is not a direct walk, there are escalators or steps going up and down to cross over different areas. The MGM, Luxor and Mandalay Bay and of course, The Convention Center are at the South End of the Strip closer to the airport. Read about the original hotels Las Vegas Strip
The Strip began in 1941, when the first "hotel casino" El Rancho Vegas opened on Highway 91, the new roadway that would go to California, which is now the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. It was not in the "city limits" when it opened but outside of what town there was at that time.

2nd in line, part of the original Frontier Village, The Last Frontier opened in 1942. Pictured at left a match cover from 1955 when a new building was added called the New Frontier! A newer and more elegant building than the old hotel that was still standing. Will it make way for the new "City by the Bay" or not?

History of the Flamingo Hotel, Even though the Flamingo is always talked about as the "first hotel ", the El Rancho actually beat it by 5 years, and "The Last Frontier" in 1942. The Last Frontier became the Frontier in 1950. Essentially then The Flamingo is our #3 entry on The Strip. It all came about in 1946, when Bugsy Siegel, as we all have either seen in the movies or read about, went into partnership with Billy Wilkerson - who owned several night clubs on Sunset Strip, including Ciro's. Billy's idea, I'm sure was to bring the Hollywood stars over to the desert for fun and games. Supposedly he did not know that his partner was a purported gangster. These old match books pictured here call it, The Show Place of the Nation". It was actually named after Virginia Hill, Bugsy's girlfriend who had red hair and the long legs of a dancer. Today, you can go to the "Bugsy Celebrity Theater", or view the beautiful flamingos on the hotel property. Book The Flamingo.

The Thunderbird Hotel which was #4, came along in 1948...started with just 76 rooms, but it kept growing. It touted the largest swimming in Nevada (of course, I don't know how big pools were in Nevada at that time)...and Rosemary Clooney made her first Las Vegas appearance in 1951 at the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird was imploded in 2000 and now is the site of the famed Turnberry Towers. Don Sofer did such a great job in Miami, he decided to try his luck in Las Vegas!

Started by Wilbur Clark, in 1946, it wasn't completed until 1950. When The Desert Inn opened it was the largest resort in Las Vegas with 300 rooms. It included the Painted Desert Showroom, and the Lucky Lady Bar. Frank Sinatra made his first appearance in Las Vegas in the Painted Desert Showroom in 1951. It was the first of thousands!
"Wilbur Clark gave me my first job in Las Vegas. That was in 1951. For six bucks you got a filet mignon dinner and me." - Frank Sinatra, 1992
The first Las Vegas Golf Tournament started here, Tournament of Champions in 1953 and went on for 13 years. Howard Hughes moved into the top floor of the Desert Inn in 1966, and bought the hotel in 1967 for $7,000,000 rather than move!
In 2001 The one tower of the Desert Inn was imploded, The golf course, and other remaining tower are still around and being incorporated into Steve Wynn's newest project "LaReve" (The Dream) named for Picasso's famed painting. This newest megaresort on the Strip, has been renamed WYNN Las Vegas...read our article about WYNN. A 5 Story man-made mountain will be the signature piece of the mega resort. His fantastic art collection is already open. Of course, the mainliner is Picasso's La Reve, You can also view Matisse, Modgliani and Van Gogh.

The Silver Slipper made it's debut in 1950 and was noted not only for gambling, but a burlesque show 7 nights a week, a boxing arena on the second floor and a really cheap breakfast for 69 cents. Dixieland music played in the Red Garter Saloon and it was one of Frankie's favorite hangouts! What better claim to fame? In 1988 the Silver Slipper was demolished and became the parking lot for the Frontier Hotel. Such is fame.

#6 on The Strip, The Sahara Hotel, "The Jewel of the Desert" opened in 1952 amid much fanfare.
Louis Prima and Keeley Smith held court in The Casbar Theater, pictured at right in the late 50's. The "Sam Buterra and the Witnesses" lined up on the stage at The Sahara! Or what really happens at 3:00 a.m. in Las Vegas! Now up-to- date with a NASCAR Cafe and what goes around comes around, featuring Charro - the bombshell that was once married to Xavier Cugat is performing at The Sahara! The Sahara doesn't look too bad for the big 50! Take a look!

...and our lucky 7 spot is filled by The Sands, opened in December of 1952, One of the first giant neon signs! And as I'm sure you know, The Copa Room was home to Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack...and alas in 1996 The Sands was imploded.

| After 1952, things were kinda quiet on the Strip, 1955 brought a resurgence of building with the 8th, 9th and 10th hotels to be built on the strip. The Dunes was #10!
Today many of these hotels that made Las Vegas a beacon to all the rest of the world are gone...but their influence remains. The glitter, the neon, the gold and the hotels have gotten bigger and bigger, whether they're better as well will be for the history pages.
